How to Choose the Right AC Size for Your Room
Why AC Size Matters
Choosing the wrong air conditioner size is one of the most common — and costly — mistakes Egyptian homeowners make. An undersized unit runs non-stop without cooling your room properly, while an oversized unit cools too quickly, leaving the air humid and uncomfortable. Getting the size right means better comfort, lower electricity bills, and a longer-lasting unit.
Understanding BTU and Horsepower (HP)
Air conditioner capacity is measured in BTU (British Thermal Units) per hour, or more commonly in Egypt, in horsepower (HP). Here's a quick reference:
- 0.75 HP = ~6,000 BTU — very small rooms up to 10 m²
- 1 HP = ~9,000 BTU — rooms up to 15 m²
- 1.5 HP = ~12,000 BTU — rooms 15–25 m²
- 2 HP = ~18,000 BTU — rooms 25–35 m²
- 2.5 HP = ~24,000 BTU — rooms 35–50 m²
- 3 HP = ~30,000 BTU — large halls and open spaces
Step-by-Step: How to Calculate the Right Size
Step 1: Measure Your Room
Measure the length and width of your room in meters and multiply them to get the area in square meters (m²). For example, a room that is 4m × 5m = 20 m².
Step 2: Apply the Base Rule
A general rule of thumb used in Egypt: multiply the room area (m²) by 600 BTU to get the minimum capacity needed. So a 20 m² room needs at least 12,000 BTU (1.5 HP).
Step 3: Adjust for Your Conditions
Several factors can increase the required capacity:
- High ceilings (above 2.8m): add 10–15%
- South or west-facing rooms with direct sun: add 10%
- Kitchen or cooking areas: add 4,000 BTU
- More than 2 regular occupants: add 600 BTU per extra person
- Poor insulation or old windows: add 10–20%
Step 4: Round Up to the Next Standard Size
Always round up to the next available HP size rather than down. A slightly larger unit running at lower capacity is more efficient than an undersized unit running at full load all day.
Quick Reference Table
| Room Size | Recommended Capacity | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 10 m² | 0.75 HP / 6,000 BTU | Small bedroom, study |
| 10–15 m² | 1 HP / 9,000 BTU | Standard bedroom |
| 15–25 m² | 1.5 HP / 12,000 BTU | Master bedroom, office |
| 25–35 m² | 2 HP / 18,000 BTU | Living room, large bedroom |
| 35–50 m² | 2.5 HP / 24,000 BTU | Large living room |
| 50+ m² | 3 HP / 30,000 BTU | Open-plan hall, commercial |
Don't Forget: Inverter vs. Non-Inverter
Once you know the right size, the next decision is whether to choose an inverter or non-inverter model. Inverter ACs automatically adjust their compressor speed to maintain the set temperature, making them significantly more energy-efficient — especially important given Egypt's long, hot summers.
